Hailing from New Jersey, Sharon Van Etten largely self-produced the album, “Are We There” from which the video for this song is found, with the valuable assistance of Steward Lerman, who she met while working on the soundtrack to the popular Martin Scorsese HBO series Boardwalk Empire. A singer-songwriter via the Indie Rock tradition, her songs display emotional rawness in the vein of Linda & Richard Thompson’s “Shoot Out the Lights” and Joni Mitchell’s “Blue.”
As a matter of fact, it is in particular in the songs “Taking Chances” and “Your Love Is Killing Me,” that Van Etten’s powerful voice often sounds like a cross between Mitchell and Joan Baez, conveying the emotional honesty that lies behind the confessional lyrics. These are confessional folk and rock songs pushing the music into new stylistic territory.
